La Espina del Diablo (The Devil's Backbone)

One of our things to do while in Mexico has been checked off. We have wanted to drive the devil's backbone to Mazatlan for a while and with Mom and Dad in Mazatlan it made sense to make the journey. We left early Friday Morning (7am) from Torreon and headed for Durango. The first part of the trip was easy driving, thanks to the toll roads.

This shot was taken after the first toll probably an hour into the drive.

The kids were super excited about their buckets. These buckets were a huge blessing...Micah used his well before the beach on the windy roads. Blech...

This shot was taken just outside a town called "El Salto" or the jump on the nice toll highway.
Toll Highway

It seems like the best memories on trips are things that go kind of wrong. Mexico is working on this toll highway but forgot to post anything about road ending. Needless to say we drove 20 km's and then found this....a dead end. Bong. I love Mexico.

Do the turn around....

Back to El Salto to take the Devil's Backbone. The next few pics are of the City. It felt like we had gone back in time 100 years.

El Salto

This road was crazy. I remember a road sign saying 167 kms to Mazatlan...2 hours later it said 127kms. Needless to say it had some serious curves....just ask Micah.
The Devil's Backbone Through the Windshield

We found a place to pull over while Micah puked into his new bucket. This happened 3more times. I felt bad for the guy. It was kind of funny because we'd pass this really slow semi truck and then have to pull over for Micah...then get back on the road only to be stuck behind the truck again. It was nearly impossible to pass on this highway.
Post Puke Micah.

There were some really beautiful vistas. Too bad we were there mid day. The pics don't do it justice.
The view of the Canyon

This was a cool rock wall...you can see the road at the bottom.
The road to Mazatlan

We made it safe and sound (took us 8.5 hrs) and have been enjoying every minute of our time here. I'll post some more pics later.
